Mixture Design Co. | Whitefish, Montana

Summary: A returning client, four distinct spaces, four days. We journey from a mid-century remodel in San Diego to a full property shoot in Montana.

The brief: Designer Carrie Chisholm had hired me previously to photograph a mid-century modern remodel in San Diego. A year later, she brought me to Whitefish, Montana, to document a new retail and residential venture from the ground up. The project included a freestanding guest house, a retail storefront, an above-warehouse apartment, and company offices, all within two alpine communities near beautiful Glacier National Park.

The approach: Four spaces, four different jobs. The guest house called for the same warmth and detail as residential work — light, materials, livability. The retail store needed to read as a brand, focusing on merchandising, product presentation, material use, and a sense of place. The office and apartment spaces above the warehouse required a more functional, straightforward approach, so I had to produce clear, well-lit documentation suited for practical use. Shooting all four in a single trip meant moving between very different visual languages without losing consistency in quality or approach.

Outcome: The final images have anchored Carrie’s professional social media presence since the shoot and are slated for her studio website once she has it updated. More than any single metric, what stood out was fidelity. We collaborated on photography polished enough to present the work at its best, without ever making the spaces look overstyled or unlike themselves.

From the client: “Andy is incredibly easy and enjoyable to work with. He takes beautiful photographs, but what I appreciated just as much was how collaborative he was throughout the process, he was always open to trying a different angle or idea and really worked with me to capture the spaces in a way that felt authentic to the project.” — Carrie Chisholm, owner, Mixture Design Co. and Haskill Creek.
